The Ritual of Becoming
Project type
Documentary
Date
2026
Location
London
In a small London room filled with wigs, fabrics and costumes, A&M prepare to become someone else — or perhaps more truly themselves. Their transformation unfolds slowly, like a ritual: the makeup, the corset, the wigs, the final look in the mirror. Between the intimacy of bare skin and the explosion of colour lies the threshold where identity shifts — the space between reality and performance, vulnerability and power. Rituals of Becoming observes that moment of suspension, when one world dissolves and another begins. It is not about disguise, but revelation. The drag ritual is a declaration of freedom, a reinvention of self through art, irony, and courage.
Each gesture — brushing foundation, tightening a corset, exchanging glances — becomes an act of self-creation. This series follows that journey: the quiet before, the ritual of change, the emergence into a world where everything becomes performance, and performance becomes truth. Through these portraits, I wanted to explore what it means to live in transition: not simply between genders, but between the intimate and the public, the ordinary and the spectacular. The room becomes both sanctuary and stage; the body, both canvas and statement.
The series celebrates the beauty of transformation as a universal human condition, the constant becoming that defines us all. In every one of us, there is a moment like this: a pause before stepping into the world, a breath before becoming someone new.
